The Plastics BAN List
On November 3, 2016 Clean Production Action together with Five Gyres, Upstream and Surfrider Foundation released the Plastics BAN (Better Alternatives Now) List report. This report highlights the growing problem of plastic waste in the ocean and the need to drastically reduce the use of polluting single use plastic packaging. Globally, an average of eight million tons of plastic escapes collection systems, winding up in the environment and often into the world’s oceans. Recent studies estimate that by the year 2050 there will be more plastic—by weight—than fish in the ocean.
The inherent nature of most polymers to persist in the environment is highly problematic, compounded by their toxicity. The report’s matrix of plastic waste commonly found in California’s environment incorporates CPA’s Plastics Scorecard’s assessment of the chemical footprint of each polymer type and ability to accumulate priority pollutants from the air and water as ocean plastic debris. CPA will continue to work with the global #breakfreefromplastics to promote the need for less packaging and the design of new materials manufactured using safer, healthier chemicals with the ability to biodegrade in composting facilities and, ideally, in the marine environment as well.
