Tyra Johnson Hux

Tyra Johnson Hux is recognized as a community connector and thought leader in the areas of socially and environmentally sustainable development. She has an outstanding track record for innovating and implementing system improvements and community initiatives by developing strong multi-sector partnerships.

In 2019, Tyra joined LISC WNY, the local office of a national nonprofit organization focused on equitable community development. She co-created and administered the Community-Based Real Estate Development Program, an educational programed designed to expand the talents of emerging real estate developers in a predominately Black community. Tyra was promoted to Deputy Director of LISC WNY in 2021, emerging as a change agent for inclusive economic development in Western New York. Additionally, Tyra currently serves on the board of directors ECIDA (Erie County Industrial Development Agency).

Prior to joining LISC, Tyra was an educator and entrepreneur. She founded Blue Sky Design Supply out of a desire to create healthy spaces that helped regenerate communities and environments. She owned and operated a retail store for over 10 years which featured sustainable and healthy building products and home décor. Blue Sky Concepts, the consulting division of her firm, supports clients to develop construction projects, educational programs, outreach, and policies that reflect their values and commitment to the community. Deeply engaged in advancing education for inclusive and sustainable design, Tyra also served as an adjunct professor at Daemen College for eight years, teaching a class on sustainable business practices.

Before her entrepreneurial journey, Tyra was a project manager for the largest commercial construction firm in Western New York – completing multimillion-dollar projects by developing strong partnerships with architects, contractors, vendors and clients while maintaining costs.

Tyra holds a bachelor of science degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a masters in business administration degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is an accredited Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) professional. Accolades she has received include: 2005 National Inner Cities Youth Organization Volunteer of the Year, BEAM 2008 Charles Campbell Sr. Outstanding Service Award, 2008 Pathfinders Award. Tyra was named a “WNY Game Changer” in the December 2012 issue of Buffalo Spree and featured in Buffalo Magazine’s “Women & Power” March 2014 issue.
