What You Can Do

  • Find out what your government’s industrial policy is. Is it to promote clean production or promote end-of-pipe pollution control? Does your government or industry sector supply technical help on cleaner production techniques?
  • Do companies in your community do pollution prevention plans? Find out what they are required to do by law and compare this to what companies in Massachusetts are required to do under the Toxic Use Reduction Act. Lobby your officials to adopt mandatory toxic use reduction legislation.
  • Do you have access to information about company emissions to the environment? Does your country have a Pollutant Release and Transfer Register? (See Right to Know section.)
  • If you are campaigning against incinerators, you need to find out who is generating the waste and what they are planning to do to eliminate it. If the company says they cannot eliminate the waste, ask to see their toxic use reduction plans and find out who can advise them otherwise. Contact your national cleaner production center, pollution prevention office, or international experts.
