Mattresses
Mattresses can contain and release chemicals of high concern, such as PBDEs—a brominated flame retardant. PBDEs build up in breast milk and can increase the risk of neurological problems in children. American women have the highest global levels of PBDEs in their breast milk.
Before you buy a mattress contact the retailer or manufacturer by phone or internet to ask if they use PBDEs or brominated flame retardant chemicals. Responsible companies list their environmental and chemicals policy in their Year End Reports which you can find online.
